Renowned for possessing some of South Africa’s finest gems, including the diamond mines in Kimberley, the highest-quality agricultural exports and, not to mention, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the vibrant Northern Cape has added yet another must-visit destination to its variety of attractions: Black Mane Butcher & Grill.
The name pays tribute to the free-roaming black maned lions synonymous with the Kalahari, where Black Mane Butcher & Grill is situated. Forming part of the service offering of the luxurious Kgalagadi Lifestyle Lodge, located a mere five kilometres from the popular Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the family-owned and operated restaurant is influenced by the natural surrounding environment.
The 50-seater vintage-inspired restaurant, which also has a grocery shop on-site offering on-the-go meals for travellers making their way through the Kalahari, offers a vibrant menu with meat being the core ingredient at the base of every dish, paying homage to the area. The proudly South African cuisine on offer at Black Mane Butcher & Grill includes the finest quality meat – including game – to burgers, artisanal sandwiches and gourmet pizzas – offering a delectable meal suitable for all palates. Black Mane On-the-Go, with eco-friendly and biodegradable packaging, offers pre-packed craft meat, including Tomahawk steaks that have been marinaded in Jack Daniels whiskey, ahead of being wrapped in a cheese cloth to support the dry-aging of the steak; as well as burger patties that offer an interesting combination of 50% brisket and 50% matured sirloin; pies, and freshly baked goods.
Founder, Developer and Head Chef, SJ Koortzen, conceptualises and develops all of the dishes with togetherness in mind. For Koortzen, who grew up in the Kalahari region, preparing only the finest quality food – whether a T-bone steak or leg of lamb – is a way to celebrate culture and heritage and create a positive atmosphere when dining, all of which leads to the forming of new friendships. All food at Black Mane Butcher & Grill is locally sourced, with special credit being given to the skilled butchers and farmers that supply quality meat from the area.
With a fire pit and swimming pool section at the restaurant, Black Mane Butcher & Grill offers the perfect ambience for dining in the Kalahari – no matter the season. The restaurant also serves its own crisp, refreshing Black Mane Pilsner craft beer on tap and offers just under 100 wines to enjoy with your meal from the newly launched wine shop.
When visiting the Northern Cape, and looking to experience one of the province’s many cultural and historical sites, Black Mane Butcher & Grill offers a truly South African dining experience that should be added to any traveller’s agenda.
